There was a report on this on the Today Programme  http://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_9143000/9143841.stm but it was just before 7am so I am sure most people missed it.

004.034 YUSUFALI: Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means.
